  • gap in exhaust, what's a good adhesive?

Replaced my entire exhaust system from the downpipe back. Didn't want to buy a cat so I have some metal conduit with adapters going into the downpipe up front and into the tailpipe behind. Problem is the conduit isn't exactly parallel so I have a gap on the bottom where the two pipes meet.

Everything is tight and good and nothing will move, but I'm having trouble finding a high temp adhesive to plug the gap. Tried a muffler gasket stuff which just blew out after one 20 mile trip.

Then tried some more expensive muffler patch stuff that had flakes of metal in it. That also blew out.

Next option? JB Weld? My father has an arc welder, could do that, but dunno if the conduit will hold the weld.

Don't want to buy a cat, but I know a proper replacement will fix it for good.

Are the flanges still there? If so you could buy a test pipe or high flow cat off Ebay. Bolt either right in place of the cat. Dont cost that much.

Try new adaptors such that the forward pipe is the male and the downstream pipe is the female....this will expose the gap filling material to less pressure and thus less chances for a blow out.

I have used box store mufler patch with great success...tricks...clean surfaces and allow to dry at moderate temp for 24 hours.

Also...for a really large gap....cover the male with patch....wrap a piece of metal window screening around it...cover it with more patch....insert it into the female.....listen for the female joint to moan....clamp like hell.

Here's a link to really got stuff......not cheap
