  • Dudley's in trouble.

I was experiencing a fuel delivery problem in my car last week that rendered it undriveable. I replaced the fuel filter, and that did not help, and without a way to test the fuel pump, and having little knowledge about carburettors, I had it towed to the Ford dealer where I used to work. They called me today and told me that my carburettor was shot, and that the engine had a lot of blowby. I was not surprised by this, because I knew the carburettor had issues, and that the car used some oil.
I just wonder if the carburettor is the cause of the most recent problem. I think its something that is more of an ongoing problem that the car has had since I bought it. I think it's worth my while to throw a fuel pump at it (45 bucks at Auto Zone) before I write it off. And if that gets it running, I'll look at an EFI conversion and engine swap down the line.
The situation is complicated by the fact that I'm moving in a week and need a car to get me to my new job. However, my parents have a '93 Grand Marquis they'd let me use for a few weeks, and my grandpa has a really nice '64 Chevy Nova 4 Door 6 cylinder he wants me to buy. Either would be a pretty cool daily driver, but my fuel economy would be cut in half.

At any rate, If a fuel pump doesn't fix Dudley, he may be up for sale shortly. He's got a flawless body, newer clutch, and working air conditioning, just so you guys know.

Think a fuel pump is worth a try?

If theyre already telling you its the carb. Why change the fuel pump? I would think if you worked with these guys in the past and they know you ,they wouldnt steer you wrong. I wouldnt spend money I didnt have to. You may be talking ALOT more money for the carb whether its rebuilt or replaced. But theres no sense in doing more than you have to.

I hope you can fix it, but if not I would be interested in giving him new life!

Sell Dudey ??? Say it aint so. Too bad we arent in the same Dearborn, I say bring it to the ranch. Fix it, your gas saving will more than pay for the repairs over time. You havent even had the car that long have you ? And it came from family.

Actually, that '64 Chevy with the inline 6 would be a sweeet ride, and really not that bad in the m.p.g department. I would consider it. You think our festy's are simple to work on? The Chevy is ridiculously simple, and parts are everywhere for them. And if you can get it for a good price, drive it for a while, and then sell it; possibly for a profit as these are getting more valuable every year.

I have to agree with Monsoon, but I would throw in the suggestion that you may want to look in the fuel tank through the sending unit hole and make sure you don't have a tank that has flaky rust falling into the gas that may clog the strainer. It happened to me before. Just a thought.

Already did that. There were a few flakes in the bottom, but the strainer was clean.

You can test the fuel pump by disconnecting the gas line and turning the engine over to see if it squirts fuel (into a container of course). Or unscrew the two bolts, pull the pump out, and examine it. It just sits in the hole with the pump lever on a cam on the camshaft to make the lever go up and down and pump the gas. Just like a hand pump for well water. When my mechanical pump was dying it leaked fuel at the gasket so was easy to tell it needed replacing. Quick and easy replacement to do.

Canadian Tire used to carry a carburettor overhaul kit. Hard to say what "shot" means.

Update. I found a carb rebuild kit at Auto Zone, and an old timer mecanic willing to rebuild it. I also picked up a fuel pump just in case. I'm going to run a compression test to see just how bad my engine is. If the carb rebuild works out, I'll keep ol' Dudley a while longer.
