  • Car died

Driving down highway at 60 ish car died. It would turn over but not start. I towed it home and checked for spark. I got spark. So I dumped a little gas in the carb it fired right up then died. Tried this again and nothing. So I blew air in the carb dried it out and tried starting again. It started but runs rough and is now blowing smoke. I have the air cleaner housing off. THe smoke is white to gray in color. Any ideas I am moving in a couple weeks and cant really afford to be off work working on this thing all day so please help asap.

PS its an 88lx 5 speed no mods

I put the air cleaner back on and it seems to be runnig ok again. I didnt do anything to fix a problem so I still have no clue why it died in the first place.

I'd get a can of spray carb cleaner and follow the directions, for a start. A great cloud of back smoke when using the cleaner indicates a dirty engine.

Otherwise a good look at the fuel system when you have the time.

You may have some other problem. When the electronic ignition module on mine was going the car would cut out at odd times and restart after a while for no apparent reason. Perhaps the ICM was acting up when hot and okay after cooling off. Who knows?
If you car is doing that the ICM can be removed and taken t some auto parts retailers for free testing.

Hope the problem has solved itself.
