shifter linkage seal help?

my trans has been leaking i was told from the shifter linkage seal, i have acquired a seal has anyone ever replaced one? does any one have any tips? or can someone scan a copy of how to out of a serivce manual. i have not looked at it being the car is in storage so it maybe simple? i was just hoping to get some insight before tackling.

i read here on another post i think you have to disassemble the trans to install the seal. my 88 leaks around the seal also, but it's not enough for me to worry about. i check the trans fluid once every six months and the fluid level is still showing full each time.

Try using one of the transmission oil stop leak products that are sold. This stuff reacts with rubber causing it to swell up. You may get lucky and save yourself a lot of work.

I have the Ford shop manual and I'll try to scan that section and post it for you. It will be Sunday before I'd be able to. Worfdog is correct, from what I remember, in that it involves disassembly of the tranny to do it. In my opinion, if you're going that far you might as well replace them all.

correct. the trans must be removed, the case halves split, and the shift shaft removed from the inside (roll pin needs tobe driven out).

by the way, is the manual or automatic we are talking about?... i have an auto and i just did my output shaft seals and i am still leaking from somewhere. No biggy, but i just hate the driveway stains it leaves.

doe! manual is the topic, i looked at my spare trans i didnt take it a apart but it looks like it could be a royal pain. last year i took it to a friends trans shop and they quoted me 100 bucks to do it but they couldnt get the part, well now i got the part but i didnt know they would have to pull the trans to replace it, and they only quoted me a 100 bucks so i dont know how they where going to charge me so cheaply, i was thinking maybe they where going to cut that 'T" piece which hooks the linkage and put the new seal in and reweld it which i dont want to do that i just dont understand how they where going to do it so cheapily. i plan on building a beefed up g25mr im wondering if i should just try and temporarly put some RTV to try and slow the leak down until i swap in the beefde up tranny? the reason im saying this is because if the guy misquoted me and they do have to take the tranny apart i rather pay once to have the tranny disassembled, rebuilt have the gears cyro and put the phantom grip in. does that make sense? the trans isnt making any noise right now it leake fluid for a while and stopped so i imagine its either below the linkage or theres no trans fluid in the trans, the trans is quiet though it doesnt sound like you can hear chattering in the gears or anything.

If you have a spare trans why not just swap it in? That would be easier and free!

well the spare trans has a broken clutch fork arm and i dont know if it has any other issues or not its only good for a rebuild
