  • Should I change the Automatic Transmission fluid 120K

I'm wondering if I should change the Auto transmission fluid on this Aspire. I was told that the new fluid has detergent that may cause it to start slipping. I'm big on doing service on a car, however if it can cause transmission falure is this a good move? The car has 120k probably never been changed but shifts good.

Second question if i do change it, should I use dextron 3 or mercon v? This is an automatic transmission.

    All advice appreciated!

    Thanks,

    Mike

All transmission fluids have detergents/surfactants in them.
    Some more than others!
You can use Mercon III, Mercon IV, or Mercon V.
Mercon IV and V superseded III.
If your tranny called for Mercon V, you should not use III or IV.

I understand about letting "sleeping dogs lie".

But, what color is the fluid in the tranny now?

Also, and some one else would have to answer this one as I've never owned a Aspire or Festiva ATX, are there any belt adjustments that need/should be made when you have the pan off. This might prevent slipping with new fluid.

go to harbor freight and purchase that 9.99 hand pump with the tubs and suck out most of the fluid before dropping your pan. i used it in both of my festiva atx and it works well.
