strange muffler noise...

91L with a 91 EGT BP installed...

I was delivering pizza last night and suddenly my muffler started sounding like one of those really annoying ricer fart blaster pipes from about 2600 to 3500 rpms. Ya know, the ones that sound like the exhaust is blowing through a bugle or a trumpet or something. Anyway, I didn't get off work till after midnight so I was dead tired and I haven't had a chance to look at it till today, which I'm about to head outside and try to diagnose it but does anyone know if there's anything that could cause this besides the muffler itself? Or is my best bet to take off the muffler and see if it still does it?

It almost sounds like the muffler slipped off the pipe.

some mufflers have a tendency to rust apart on the inside, but look ok from the outside. Chances are, the baffles inside have holes rusted thru them. Bloo had exactly your symptom (noisy only in certain rpm range) for about a year, before the muffler finally puked its guts out.

^ ^ lol muffler bearings but yeah i'm guessing baffles and i did see some rust on the outside but i don't think its all the way through. Actually the little blue's muffler rusted a huge hole in the side of it and it was loud but never like this is. Prolly just the baffles then. Oh well its just an excuse to goto a full 2 1/2" exhaust and loe the cat then thanks for the quick replies!

It's the muffler. I had this happen on my Buick. Every time I got on it, it sounded like the world's biggest bee.

actually right now AA is having a half price sale on some decent looking muffler tips (not too ricey) and I'm thinking for the time being I may just remove the muffler and install a resonator tip, at least until I can fab up a new exhaust system.

are you sure? I was seriously thinking it might be the anhydrous nangling pin, the regurgurative pearl-well, or possibly the supernative weenol sprocket...

I would go with the supernative weenol sprocket for a first try but if that is not it I would try the snickleflux upstart capacitorlator myself. Seems to always be that IMO.

Mufflers rust insde out. I took mine off once, turned it on end, and rapped it with a hammer. Lots of rust fell out. Put it back on. I have one of those lifetime muffler replacement guarantees from Midas ever since I bought the car in '89. Pretty sure they lost money on it. Thse lifetime warranties were supposed to keep customers on a string but they almost bankrupted the muffler chains instead.

As for things getting blown into the muffler, it's a common trick for muffler shops to tell people the catalytic converter is disintigrating and blowing bits into the muffler and damaging it. They try to get people to replace perfectly good converters that way. Midas has tried to do that to me but the car keeps passing the emissions check so I tell them to leave it alone.

Midas is the worse - STAY AWAY. The previous owner of my car took it there and they gave me all the paperwork. They were ripped-off and then some. Another time when I moved from MD to PA, I took my Van in there for PA state inspection. When I called to see if it was done, I was told I needed $800 of brake work. When I said "impossible, I just did the brakes a month ago". they were so smart they said "silver van right?" I said "no, Blue van". then I was told all was O.K. My cubicle mate took me there within 10 minutes and there was no silver van anywhere to be found. They seemed very trained in the ways to rip people off and cover their tracks. I'm sure if I didn't confront them my blue van would have had $800 worth of brake work done. I don't think they realized that the vehicle was a state transfer instead of a vehicle sale. Very sneaky - I have told this story many times in an effort to run those guys out of business. The Midas I was dealing with was in King of Prussia, PA. After seeing the repair orders on the Festiva I got, that was taken to the same shop, my instincts were proven correct - Those guys are ruthless! STAY AWAY - I can't emphasize that enough!
