  • Grinding or rubbing noise

I'm guessing this is the throw-out bearing but I figured I'd run it by the experts:

    1993 5 speed

Rubbing or grinding noise when car is in gear and clutch is engaged. Stops when clutch is disengaged. Also occurs with transmission is in neutral and I've not got the clutch to the floor.
Otherwise, shifts fine and runs well. 42 mpg on the last tank, pretty considering the hills I have to climb.

    Time for a clutch kit?

What do you mean by engaged....pedal up or down.

A bad throw out will begin by making noise just as the pedal is pressed down.
Could be a broken pressure plate spring or bad rivets or something in the bell.

It might be time to open it up and look further.

Pedal up....noise. Pedal down, no noise. Crap. I was hoping it was the throw out bearing.

ya if it was the t-bearing, there would be no noise when your not on the clutch, then it would start making noise soon as you pushed on the clutch enough for the t-bearing to start making contact

try draining the fluid and replacing it with more than 50% lucus friction modifier and ATF

            or

try using 75w90 (or the light weight hypoid gear oil)

Snot. I found the problem. Speedometer cable housing bolt worked loose somehow, I was about a quart low on fluid. The noise is going away the more I drive it after filling it back up. I'll probably drain and replace the fluid after next payday.
