  • Clutch noise when engaging

I've noticed lately that if I'm stopped at a light or something, and I accelerate in first, I get a weird noise as I'm letting the clutch out. It sounds like a dry metal rubbing noise almost. It's very short and sometimes I don't notice it. It seems to do it every time. It's hard to explain the noise since it's not high pitched, and it's not very dull.

Does anyone have any ideas what it might be? Thanks

It sounds like your throw-out bearing is getting ready to go out on you.

Does it sound like a low growl?

Not really. It almost makes the sound like if you have a standard/manual, and you throw it into first while you're still rolling backwards a bit. In comparison..it sort of makes the kind of noise that a wooden table would make if you were dragging it over top of a tile floor..but in the sense of my car, it only lasts for a split second.

I'm still leaning toward the throw-out bearing, but your clutch disc may be excessively worn, too.

One last question: Do you feel a chattering through the clutch pedal or through the car when taking off from a stop?

I'm at work at the moment so I can't give you a definite answer, but if I recall correctly, I can feel it in the clutch pedal a bit. Not a lot, but enough to notice it.

With a chatter and the noise you are describing, I would recommend getting the clutch looked at. In my opinion, I believe you are due for a new clutch kit, but it may just be the throw out bearing.
