  • 93 festiva won't charge???? new alt still no go??

I have a 93 festiva and it has stopped charging ??
I was driving and my radio was cutting out and I stopped to see what was going on and when I tried to start the car it was dead!!
I boosted it with a pack and off I went to my cousins work at a nissan dealership to use some of his killer set of tools.. the volt meter reads 12.8 without car running and 12.0 and down with it running so I am thinking alternator but after a trip to the parts car and a good cut on my hand the parts car alternator showed the same thing so now what ???
    where do I go next???

I also checked the battery and it tests good and is about 6 months old.

    thanks

I cleaned and looked over all the grounds I could find and they are good.
I even jumped the main big alternator wire direct to the battery alone with the ground and still nothing.
my check light showed power at the alternators big wire and also at the 2 smaller wires with exception of the one smaller wires it showed a dimmer light when tested.
charge indicator dash light is now on so it works..

I may have 2 bad alternators????
I will take them to get tested at the repair shop I guess??

12.8VDC off and less than 12.0VDC running......Something on the secondary side of the master control relay is failing....or.....possibly a fusible link went bad, high resistance.

mine did it all winter and changed alternators still did not fix the problem. i was head strong at first but listened to members on the forum and guess what? it was a bad alternator belt all along and i hung my head low in shame by not listining to them.

If the belt is slipping and not turning the alt pulley as fast as it should it will cause charging problems.

                              ok .... get this!!!
today I tightened the belt as far as i could and it was so tight that it was making a weird sound but this was just to test if it was slipping .
                              voltmeter read 12.2

installed new belt and adjusted it so it was tight but not overtight and voltmeter reads 14.3..

so if your festy is not charging change the belt first !!!

                              wow
