hey my alternator belt flipped over and broke.. what the hell could made it do that?

i have no idea,maybe something on the pulleys or in the way of the path of the belt, just time for a new belt and it bellied up like a fish -
something may have flew up off the road and got between the belt and pulley. have seen it happen on riding mowers. if belt was old it would not take much.1960 willys pickup
