      I dont know exactly how you are going to check the preload after being assembled. You are supposed to check the bearings with just light oil lubricating them, then reassemble with bearing grease.

      If they are already assembled with bearing grease the measured preload will be considerably higher.

        I'm not sure either. I may have to clean them up first. It's about time to get started on them. I'll know more later.

          I would do a preload measurement before you clean them up and then after.
          How are going to clean them up?

            I merely answered FB71's question. Sometimes I get windy.

            Okay, I went to the machine shop while ago. The machinist told me he'd made a mistake, the new bearings didn't come with a new spacer (shim) as some of you indicated so he used the old one. Based on what I've read here about select fit of the bearings, that was reassuring news. I then ask him how he had set pre-load. He said he used his bearing press to squeeze the assembly while he spun the hub and the pre-load felt fine to him.

            I put a large bolt through the assembly while ago and cranked it tight. I didn't clean the grease out he had packed in there. The preload "felt right" considering the grease.

            The spec supplied here was "Festiva front hub bearings are to be set at 2.5-10 lb/in rotational torque". I hope that was in error and he meant in/lbs instead of lb/in. 2.5-10 in/lbs is just a very light drag.

            Anyway, I'm satisfied I'll be okay the way this is set-up.
