  • Broken bolt Update :(

ok well tryed the chisel method but no room to play.

I can get a drill from my gfs dad but dont know what to do from there.

I don't know what exactly to use.

Something like a easy out? drill bit then hooka to the drill, then drill. Then the hole that i drilled use the screwdriver to get it out?

I am using my gfs accord(which i hate) so any immediate help with links or pictures to exactly what i need would be appreciated.

Easiest way is to get a left handed drill bit. Get a couple sizes smaller than the actual bolt. You will actually run the drill in reverse with a LH drill. It will drill into the bolt a little and then grab it and pull it out. Literally unscrewing the broken bolt from the hole. Be careful you only want to push hard enough to get the drill to cut in a little bit. Youll feel it trying to come out when it grabs the bolt. Let it.And just ease it out. Take youre time. No sense rushing it and ending up with bigger problems.

ok I am getting a drill tomorrow, how do i know if it is lefthanded? run the drill in reverse meaning counterclockwise?

I understand these are simple questions but when its all over I will be laughing at myself.

When you go to the hardware store or wherever you go to get tools, just ask someone for a lefthanded drill bit. Theyll know what youre talking about. If they dont. Run! You dont want to buy from them anyways. And yes run the drill counterclockwise.

lol, sounds good, give me 10 years when I become a lawyer

ok well going to pick up the drill today. Her dad sai d the drill itself is universal but honestly has no idea about the type of bits he has so I am going to just find a very small bit and drill it in reverse?

NO! Those are regular rotation drills he has and all youll do is round off the drill bit. You need to go to a hardware store and ask for a left handed drill bit. Get it a couple sizes smaller than the actual bolt size.
Again you need to go to a hardware store and ask for a left handed drill bit. Most people do not keep them in their toolbox.

No problem. Just remember to take your time. That way you dont have any problems. Might want to squirt some PB Blast or WD-40 or something in there to help loosen things up.

I'm getting a little concerned here, this is a crankshaft pulley retaining bolt?? Probably either 3/8 or 7/16 and should be hardened steel, probably grade 8. He's not going to get this thing out with a left hand twist drill, if that's the case, he's going to need a 1/2 inch industrial hand drill with a good high speed drill bit and cutting oil. I don't see how he's going to do this without removing the motor from the car......... He won't even have enough clearance to get the drill in the proper position to drill a hole in the center of the bolt..

Yeah if its hardened hes going to have a time getting it out. I didnt think about it possibly being hardened. But Im also not a big fan of easy outs(Probably because I never have good luck with them).Where as Ive never had the left hand drill bit fail me yet.But Ive never had to deal with a hardened bolt under the shade tree. In a machine shop yes. But I had what I needed when everything else failed.
Lot of potential issues here. I get the impression that collegbois mechanical experience is slightly lacking. No offense collegeboi.

none taken, i admit I am in a learning stage when it comes to cars.

I have accomplished the simplist of things like changing trns oil, timing and alt belts.

The car is in a covered garage and not in the heat. I have also sprayed wd40 so it will have play.
