  • Transmission whining

Cherry Bomb is an '88 L with a four speed. I noticed that in 4th gear when gas is applied, there is a high pitched whine. When I let off the gas, it stops. When I press the gas again, I hear it again. It is easily drowned out by the radio. There appears to be no problems with the tranny otherwise. Is this normal, or is there something I need to check? I did replace the fluid in it a month or so ago when I replaced the drive axles. There are no leaks and it shifts flawlessly. Just wondering if I'm just being overly paranoid.

Are you sure your fluid is full? Are you sure its the transmission? Sorry for the simple questions. But sometimes its the simple things.

I know for a fact the fluid is full. I assume it is the transmission since it only does it in 4th gear.

Check your speedo cable. Really listen and try to pinpoint the noise. Mine was doing this and it was the speedo cable.

Would the speedo cable only do it in 4th?

            I'm with Monson on this.
I "knew for a fact" that my fluid was full too.
But, due to an impact on the passinger side wheel/axle the driverside axle was forced out enough for a fluid leak to occur.
It took a week before I heard the high pitch whine in 5th that you speak of.
Do me a favor and check your fluid and then you tell me I'm wrong.
probably wont be the last time I'am.
But you don't need to get caught like I did 40 miles from home in the dead of winter with the gears making a hedious noise.
            Good luck!

Yes, because you need to be going that fast in order to make the noise. Mine would only make the noise when I was doing 60+ but sometimes it was 70. But I do agree with what the other guys are saying. check your tranny fluid. It is free to do, and it is easier than replacing the speedo cable.

I checked the fluid and it is fine. I re-lubed the speedo cable and it still makes the noise. It makes it only in 4th gear and only while pressure is applied to the gas. The moment I ease up on the gas it goes away and the moment I press on the gas it comes back. I can hear it as slow as 35 mph in 4th. I'm pretty sure it is coming from the transmission. Any suggestions?

                    Throwout bearing?
Does it go away if you press the clutch?

The only time I hear it is while driving in 4th. There is no noise at all while pressing the clutch in or releasing it.

You may have a bearing going bad. I'd drive on and see if it got worse. Transmissions are cheap.

Differencial gears can sound like that and only make noise when accelerating. Some timeswith vehicles that are towed a lot behind an RV you get the decel side worn out first and you get the opposit symptom, noise when not acceleration. This doesn't explain though why it's only in 4th gear though unless you just can't here it until a certain (higher) speed.
