  • valve chatter

recently the valves started chattering in my 92 gl, i changed the oil and still chattering. it mostly does it on hills or when i stomp the gas pedal, but its getting louder and more frequent. the motor has always been kinda noisey, but this is getting out of hand. any ideas?

Probalbly time to tear the heas down.
    What to look for.....
    Worn Valve margins and seats
    Worn vave guides
    Blocked oil ports.
Sticky rockers or hydralic lash adjusters.
    Loose rocker assemblies.
    Broken or weak springs.
    Worn or scored cam lobes.
    Worn cam bores.
Some of these inspections can be performed with just the valve cover off.
    Just a start.

I'm sure someone else has recommendation for a commercial product to add to the oil prior to tearing the head down.

I use to run a 20w-50 synthetic blend oil in my older engine with good results. Calmed down the lifter tick and the overall engine noise. This may be especially helpful in the hot summer months, but I ran it year around.
