Whats best to remove goo before paint on windshield?

Considering a wire wheel , which means taping the interior hole with plastic so the black crud doesn't get inside.
Any ideas or help would be appreciated !!!

Goo-Gone works miracles with sticky situations... It would probably work. It takes the old gum left behind from a sticker that's been there for years, so it must take that stuff off. It's also quite cheap. Places like Walmart and Canadian Tire sell it. By the way, is there any Canadian Tires in the States (wouldn't that be weird if there was LOL!)

razor blades work wonders on glass..

EDIT: reread the subject.. brass wire wheel is what you need, it won't remove or scar the metal like a regular wire wheel.
