  • Entire brake system question

I just picked up an 88lx and the brakes are shot- and I mean shot!

As I do my own work I figured this should be pretty easy but...

I've spent quite a while "searching" all of the brake posts but still have not found what I'm looking for.

Here's the deal. The front rotors and pads are wasted-along with the dust cover. I went to 3-4 parts stores and none could get the dust cover and the few places that could get the rotor could only order one that is supposed to fit but is way off.

Then the rear drums are also toast along with the backing plates that the shoe/spring assembly sits on. No one can get either the backing plate or the drums.

I do not have any yards at my disposal and I'm not really inclined to start modding this car at this time. I just wanted a cheap little car the would be safe and reliable and I assumed that the brakes shodl be no big deal but it's becoming a real PITA.

Anyway, can someone post actual part numbers and where I can buy these parts so that I can get this car on the road asap??

Here's a pic of one of the rotors:

Joe: Thans for the post but I think I misspoke... I meant the dust shields that go behind the rotors (The thin metal plates that are slightly larger)

Also, it was just brought to my attention that there might be a variation in rotors for the L vs. the LX model? Is this true?

The ones that go behind the rotors are almost impossible to find. Maybe some member down south could find some clean ones for you.

Please note that I have updated my profile

IS there any guidance on these brakes? ie: part numbers, places to buy, etc?

I can't do anything else on this car until I get the brakes ready to go.

You could make a post in the "For Sale/Wanted" section for the dust cover and backing plates. All the other parts, drums, shoes, pads, and brake hardware can be found at www.rockauto.com I use Festivas for dirt track racing and I remove those dust covers from the front wheels. I've never had any problems with them removed.
                    You gonna race that thing?

I checked out rockauto but the front rotors they sell look like the new ones in my pics and not like the ones currently on the car. I got my new ones for $17.00 a piece so they're a good deal but not what I need for the car as far as I can tell.

As for the backing plates, I'd prefer new as opposed to used...

I think it's pretty safe to say you aren't going to find new ones... If it's any consolation, your's look about like mine. Just put it back together and quit worrying

Did you see the holes and the torn up groves? It's so bad that there is a piece that I pulled and if you look closely it's wrapped up over the backing plate...

I can't believe that these are not available...

Agree with Dave G. Rotors and drums look good to me. Do you have free brake inspection in your area? I can take my car to Canadian Tire and they will tell me if the brakes need work, not charge for the inspection. Put your mind at rest.

It's kind of hard to see but the rotors are gouged to pieces as the brake pads are gone and it's just the plate that holds the pads that's left.

The drums are rusted and cracked. The backing plates for the drums are full of holes and rusted to pieces as well.

If this is going to be so difficult, Can someone break down an exact list of parts (part numbers) I'd need to the aspire swap or some upgrade? I searched but I cannot seem to find a comprehensive list of parts that are necessary.

I'm gonna pull my hair out!:angry1:
