so i wentup to the local autoparts store today to get a new air filter for my 1989 carb model and got it and put it in my car when i started it the car it seemed to idle a little higher i took note of it and drove on my way. when i made a next stop it seemed to get even higher then when i made it home when i turned off the car dieseled a bit and the carbed burped on me. could a new air filter really cause this or did i have to bumb something and mess up the timing?

You probably have a vaccuum hose off.

It would have to be a small enough one to allow the extra air in to make it run higher but not so big that it leans it waaaaay out and dies.
