not really... if you have an 1989 that'd have manual adjustments, not the hydraulic lash adjusters found in the later ones..

-"Hairlipstiva" 1991 GL 5spd (swapped from an auto), rolling on Enkei 14x6 +38 with 195/45/14 Toyo's, Jensen MP5720 CD deck, tach install, LED strip in cluster, down position rear wiper, FMS springs, Gabriel shocks on 4 corners, Acura Integra short shifter

Might want to watch the belts. It may be them instead of the valves. Timing belt may be a bit overtightened.

Only had a breif experience with a valve tap in my Festiva...I picked up a burr inside the bore on the rocker arm....Other than that....never a problem.

I've seen and experienced alot of valve trian noise in other engines...most related to cheap no name oils.

i think the 89 autos were hydralic lifters and fuel injected.

Try some Rislone engine treatment. Just use it in place of some oil during your next oil change. Use like half a quart of Rislone with 2 1/2 quarts of oil.

Take the oil fill cap off and lean over the front of the car with the top of your head toward the firewall. Take a light and look in the oil fill hole toward the front driver's side corner of the valve cover and you can just barely see the end of the exhaust valve rocker for #4 cylinder. If you know the difference between a mechanical and hydraulic rocker arm, you should be able to see it if you get the right angle as you look in the oil fill hole. If you can't see it, you could try a small mirror to look, also.
                You gonna race that thing?

My carb'd '89 has mechanical lifters.
The Haynes manual should say which models have hydraulic lifters.
I belive they were added when the engines were changed to fuel injection
                  and automatic transmissions were introduced.
