  • Valve train stuck.

I went to replace the timing belt that was broken in a 1988 festiva. Got it all apart and went to turn the cam shaft to set the timing. Tried to turn the sprocket and it would not budge. So I pulled the valve cover and tried to turn the cam with a wrench inside....would not budge. Suggestions? bent valves? bad cam shaft bearing? Bad distributor? I am not sure what exactly can cause this. I would think I would be able to turn the cam fairly easily.

It's possible the cam seized causing the belt to snap...

so you are saying that the cam itself is bad?

the head is bad. This has been a somewhat common problem. The oil feed hole in the center cam journal cokes up with sludge, starving the cam for oil. It then locks in the head. There are no replaceable cam bearings. The bores in the head are heat treated and not serviceable. Long story short, it needs a head and a cam.
