  • Locks???

One component of the Festiva that has always been cheap are the locks. On the one I have now the passenger side is missing altogether (hole in the door where the key hole is), the one on the drive side works but is obviously in need of lubricant and the one on the gas door is rusted. As anyone ever changed the locks on the car and how do you go about doing that? Never had this problem on a car before.

Easy as pie! You need to remove the inner door panel and unclip the rod that connects to the key portion. Then you need to remove the clip that holds the door lock in place. Itll slip right out, then simply do it all in reverse. If youve got short fat fingers like me its a little awkward and I found it easier to use a hammer to tap the clip back in place.
Once you get the door panel off and look at it youll see how straight forward it is.

I changed out the door and hatch locks along with the ignition switch in just over an hour.

I'm not sure, but I think it makes a difference which side is which. I think I had a driver side in my passenger door and it didn't work quite right. I replaced them all since then and I can't remember.

Do you have to buy locks specific to a Festiva or will generic auto locks work? Can you rekey the locks yourself specifically for the key you have or do you have to have a lock smith? Obviously this is one area where I am completely out of my element.

Post a [WTB] in FS/FT section. Theres bound to be someone that can hook you up with a complete set including ignition so youll only need one key. And dont quote me but yes I believe its Festy specific.

I know some key's will work in multiple festiva's, but I wouldn't put money on finding one that does. A friend has some key's that can open my door, but not start my car. Also, if I'm not mistaken the locks are interchangeable, but you would need to turn the key the other way to open it.

There is a left and right side on the doors. The hatch is the same as the left side IIRC (50/50 chance ) .

There are a couple of "Pull-A-Part" locations here close so I'm going to check with them before posting a WTB but that's a great idea Monsoon. This will be a nice clean car once I get the minor bugs fixed. If you have any other suggestions on where I might find a full lock/ignition set let me know.

                  Thanks

                    New locks to install....

I've finally got Hot Rod running and he's doing great. Now it's time to install the locks I bought a couple of months ago. On the passenger side some egg head twisted the old lock cylinder out and bent up the door. I'm going to make a rubber gasket to put between the outside of the door and the cylinder to stop leaks but need to flatten out the door some first. I do not want to cause more damage to the door so would like ideas on how to smooth this out. I tried using a rubber mallet and some heavy cloth so as not to scratch the door. No scratches but not flat either. Ideas from you body guys?

I don't remember if that lock is on a curved surface. Maybe run a bolt/washer from the inside out, put a washer/nut on it and tighten it up to flatten the metal?

^^^ I've used that trick before on a trunk lid that the lock had been pulled out of!
