  • Clutch replacement

i need to do my clutch (needed to for a while..its stoping me from driving like a madman  ) and i think i may tackle the job this weekend. can you do it by only pulling the motor...i realy dont want to pull the tranny as well (need someone to help me get the axles out and nobody will). i can do the motor by myself if its possible....can i change the clutch by only pulling the motor? is it extremely difficult to pull just the motor for clutch replacement?

You can just pull the motor and leave the tranny in. I just did mine last month and I pulled the motor out and left the tranny in.

well that saves a lot of headache...i was told it was much much easier to pull the trans with it. id rather wiggle and squirm the motor out than wiggle and squirm both axles out. cool...that made my day

My BP which is longer comes out fine. Remove the front pulley for additional clearance.

also have to do a clutch replacment

hello, i also have to do a clutch replacement, but on a 1988 festiva. The clutch recently went out completely and we have already ordered the new clutch kit. I was told to replace the cylinder/solenoid at the same time since it would probably go out soon anyways. Anyways, i was wondering if there was anybody that give me detailed instructions on how to change this clutch since it would be my first time to do so. Id appreciate the help greatly ~ Pamela

Not sure what you mean by cylinder/solenoid. Are you refering to the slave cylinder? The festivas don't have these, they are cable operated clutches.

Get a Haynes manual from the library to assist in the clutch removal and ask any questions here if you get stuck.

I need to change the clutch in my '89. I got 130,000 miles on the original clutch but now it is slipping. I was told to drop the Trans out the bottom & leave the engine in. You just pry the CV axles out of the trans (leave them connected to the hubs) and tie them up and out of the way in the engine compartment. This seems faster than engine removal. The factory Ford repair manual also shows removing the trans. I will change the output seals, and the rear main seal right away too. I have not decided if I will do it myself or get someone else to do it.

go with matt's plan. just remove the engine. i havnt tackled mine yet but i did look at it a good bit to see what all i had to do.

disconnect throttle cable...radiator hoses...air intake duct...all electrical conectors goin to the motor....gas line....motor mounts and tranny bolts....exhaust (either at the head or where it bolts togather slightly further down)

may seem like a lot but all of what i mentioned is quick and easy...except the exhaust depending on how rusted yours is. i think it would be quicker and less agrivating than dropping the trans or pulling both. also if you drop the tranny you gotta mess with the exhaust...i hate those damn spring bolts.
