  • Grinding Noise When Shifting

Hey, I've been driving my festy for 2 days now. i thought the clutch wasnt adjusted well soo i played around with it... found out that its not the clutch...

Every time I go to shift gears in the car no matter how adjusted the clutch is, the gears grind... I'm wondering if its a syncro issue or something.... Anyone else come across this issue?

Is it all gears, or is it one particular gear that you are trying to get into?

Soundslike the synchros are not workin properly, has anything changed in trans , oil, lack of it , ?? Has trans been abused ? , , Drain oil into clean pan look for brassy metallic, that would be synchros perhaps,
Maybe a thrust washer has worn away making synchros not work?
Sounds like you might have to take a look at trans, you are sure clutch is disengaging?
Aspires and Sways all around, Miata B6 installed, KYB G2Rs just installed in front. Wish for coil overs someday.

The tranny has plenty of fluid, I checked and topped off when I did the swap. I dont have too much information about the history if the tranny, I bought it used, so I kind of half expected it. And yes I'm sure the clutch is disengaging.

Clutch disk could be binding on the tranny input shaft. Or, not releasing from the pressure plate surface in a timely manner.

Lately, my pristine 88LX with 180K on it grinds when downshifting into 2nd, but only above about 20mph, say, when I'm doing the posted 25mph limit on a residential steet, come upon a half-mile steep downhill portion, and don't want to smoke the brakes on the way down, or slow down to 20 to get into 2nd.

I don't experience this problem when downshifting into any other gear at any speed, not even first.

Does the "synchro" consist of different parts for each gear so that I might be having it go out only on second?

BTW, the clutch was new at engine rebuild at 133K and is properly adjusted.

for now, try double shifting! might help with the syncronization...
(press clutch, go to neutral, release clutch...press clutch, into gear, release clutch)
