Oh man, that wouldn't be good! I haven't had to really hammer it. Just tapped it really, but I don't want to risk breaking it, to be sure. Thanks for bringing that up. I appreciate all the insight I can get!

I'm about to figure I'm gonna snag a junk speedo cable connector the next JY visit I take. Then I'll cut the cable off to make a wire puller to snap that rascal out easily. I may be able to go out back and find something else that has the same threads to braze up a RG puller.

I was able to put two quarts in the axle hole before I put the second one back in. Figured since there wasnt an obvious fill port, thats how it was supposed to be done on these cars. Took the full two quarts and hasn't given me any problems yet. I'll probably put an extra half a quart in there from the actual fill hole. lol.

That'as interesting that means only .6 runs out when the axle is pulled. The reservoir in the bottom holds most of the oil volume then.

good job! I would also add NOT to over-tighten the 10 mil bolt upon completion. It doesn't snug up to the edge of the hole like you might think, and if you try to tighten it, the nub on the speed housing will break. Very annoying.
i guess ive been lucky cause the casing for my speedometer has the little tab that fits over the bolt broken and ive pulled it in and out couple times and put it back in and take a small block of wood and put it on top and tap the wood with a hammer to make sure its snug and it doesnt leak or turn. Just gotta make sure o ring is good and it fits snug in the hole. Ive been driving the car for 5 years now like that and i change the fluid once a year and it has always been full.

I know its a little old but I just did this job this weekend...well the fill part. I didn't disconnect the speedo though. I think it aided in pulling up on the gear. Was a little tough at first but you have to get that oring to pop and then it is easy.

Now that you have the primal mechanical ooz draining into the SS Bowl that you borrowed from the kitchen years ago, and of course she refused to take back, no matter how well you cleaned it,
now thats some great stuff i'm sure we all have been there some time..
