  • engine check light comes on when car idles

Mechanic said could be (a) computer EEF system (what's that?); (b) throttle linkage; (c) throttle sensor; or (d) throttle body.

We did not get repairs at that time. Engine check light did not come on going home.

Diagnostics said #010, #016 (these are cords?) HELP!

It would help if you let us know your year, make and model as well as transmission type and location. Go to User CP at the top of the page to add the info.

    A) Is the EEC or your car's computer

    #10 & 16 are in fact codes

#10 is intake air temp sensor
#16 is EGR valve position sensor

These components will be in different places depending on the vehicle that you are asking about, that's why we need to know what you have. I'm guessing it's an 88 Festiva, but I'll let you tell us:-)

engine check light comes on when car idles

Wow! Thank you. My car is a 1988 Ford Festiva L, 2-door sedan, with manual 4-speed transmission. The info you gave me makes me feel uneasy about the mechanic we saw. The car is a neat car in great shape. It has always lived in the garage. Would appreciate anything else you might be able to add.

Once I had one side of the car jacked up to, I think, change the timing belt. After putting everything back together I tried starting the engine and got the EGR sensor code. When the car was put back down level and the code cleared it never reappeared. I concluded it had something to do with the engine not being level.
Do you know how to read the check engine codes yourself?

Um, somebody posted in another thread that the '88 models didn't have a check engine light. Mine is an '89. Festivas weren't sold here in Canada until '89.
