  • O2 Sensor

    Whats the best way to remove this thing? I've been letting in soak in PB Blaster for 2 days and tried using an O2 sensor socket with no success. Since the car has A/C its a really tight fit for the socket also.

    Remember "I" before "E", except as in Budweiser.

      I don't know why I always forget about adding heat, ha. Guess I should put it together and let it idle a little bit to heat it up. Also, with this being an 88 and carbed, does it have a check engine light?

        Might have to remove the grill, but the use of an impact wrench after the PB blaster might help considerably.
        Provided you have one or can beg or borrow one!
        They have with the use of the impact socket saved me from snaping off many many bolts.

          Yea, I'm kind of scared because this looks like the original one. Its really rusty looking. I just wanna get it replaced!

            Yes, the carburetted engine has an oxygen sensor. It has to warm up before it works. While the engine is waming up the vaccum and mechanical devices in the distributor are used to adjust the timing. After the oxygen sensor warms up the computer takes over adjusting the timing based on the reading it gets from the sensor. These carburettors are called "feed back" carburettors because they are adjusted according to what the engine is doing. Hence all those vacuum tubes and solenoids.

                on my 88 car, i actually pulled the threads out of the exhaust manifold geting it off there. i went and bought a tap (i think it was the next size up), tapped the hole back out, and the new sensor went in ok. it didnt seem to leak, and mine was the original o2 sensor.
                89 L, hopefully returning from the dead soon with a little more power... :twisted:

                    88's DO NOT have a CEL. 89 and later did.
                    Trees aren't kind to me...

                        interesting note, if you take the tab off the end of the plug a box end wrench fits over the connector. 7/8" 12 or 6 point.

                          It will come out alot easier if it is hot....run the engine for 1 or 3 rad fan cycles...DON"T BURN YOURSELF.

                          Mine came out after 16 years with a box wrench...I removed the conductors from the housing and slid the wires thru the box.

                          Just a suggestion....pull the pipe...put the pipe in a vise...heat the threads with a torch...use a wrench of your choice...maybe a pipe wrench!?!?
