  • 2 Speedometer questions

I have a 93 festi with man tran and 200k. I recently replaced the speedo cable because it broke and used the factory grease. Here are my 2 questions.
    1. I broke the bolt down flang that secures the speedometer gear to the transmission, anyone know where to pick up a new one?

    2. The Speedomoter is off now. Between 20-25mph it jumps between 15 and 30(sorta wobbles). Had my wife drive with me and here is what the readings verse actual are

25 actual is 28 on the speedo
35 actual is 39 on the speedo
    45 actual is about 55
65 actual is well above 70

    anyone have any ideas? Thanks

    1. Don't think New are available, best bet is a JY

2.As it isn't a set difference all the way up to scale, I hazard a guess that it is the spring tension in the speedo mechanism.
I don't know if this is adjustable or not.
Also, don't know why it should be off just by replacing the cable.
    Might be other issues!

You could be right, might have been an issue all along, or have been getting progressivly worse. I jsut noticed it though. What can be done about the tension?

That or I might have one around here somewhere if you can't find one in the JY.
Personally, I'd get another one put it in to make sure it works, then try to make adjustments to the original one!
Because, if you try to fix your original one and break it, your sh..surely out of luck!

You've got OEM tire size, correct? Having a larger diameter tire will make the speedometer be slower.

Did you replace the speedometer gear assembly on the tranny also? You mentioned the bolt down flange, is why I ask. There can be a different amount of teeth on the speedo drive gears from a different transmissions. Make sure the tooth count is the same if you replace the drive gear assembly. Your factor is real close at .12 in all except for the 45 to 55 reading. May be a 1 or 2 tooth difference.

all the speedo gears for the festivas and aspire manual trans are the same. the stock tire size causes the speedo discrepancy (also artificialy boosts the MPG figures). a 185/60/14 or equivilant tire size will remedy this.

The tires that I have on it are 145/70/r12 and no I did not replace the speedo gear. Right now the o-ring is what holds it into place
