I've removed the windshield and the roof ditch moldings. What should I use to remove the remaining urethane? I've tried mechanical means (flapper wheel, scotchbrite cookie, etc.) but it just melts and smears.

only way is a good razor and time. once you get it down to the last thin layer, xylene should do the trick with a stiff wire brush.Trees aren't kind to me...

Check with the Chem Prof and see if he as any aprotic solvents such as N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), or N,N-Dimethylformamide (DMF).
These are very powerful solvents.
Sorry Skeeter and Charliez, I don't know how else to name these materials.
DO NOT get any on your skin, use chemical resistant gloves (these dissolve vinyl and N-butyl gloves).
Don't need to wear a mask because these are very low volatile materials.
The solvents are water soluble so can be rinsed off with water.
I can not guarantee that they will not remove the paint as well, so be careful.Last edited by Pu241; 09-26-2008, 09:26 AM.'93 Blue 5spd 230K(down for clutch and overall maintanence)

After having posted the above, I though about the use of a small steam generator.
Used to use one from an expreso maker to remove wall paper worked like a charm.
the adhesive is probably some sort of tackified product and with heat should become less so.
Another option is solid carbon dioxide (dry Ice) or liquid nitrogen which might freeze it and make it brittle enough to pop off the metal or shatter and fall away under a light impact.
Just a few ideas.
Good luck!'93 Blue 5spd 230K(down for clutch and overall maintanence)

I removed mine, I used a wire wheel on my angle grinder. Then some paint thinner to get the rest. If I remember correctly.

Well, my friend, do you have any suggestions? I don't care if the paint comes off, because I'm prepping it for repaint as we speak (which is why the ditch molding came off to begin with)Jim DeAngelis

problem is, urythane doesn't react like epoxy and requires different solvents to break down.Trees aren't kind to me...
