  • major short

I've got a short. The short happens whenever I turn on the head lamps. I then lose my dash lights and parking lights. I sort of solved the problem by using stronger fuses but once it blew a 30 amp fuse I took it to someone to look for the short. They never found it but they said that they narrowed it down to the parking lamp relay which he could never find but he did get the car to work with a 15 amp fuse. Anybody know where that relay is? All he did was reposition the fuse box and it worked fine after that.

There are three relays on the drivers side just below the headlight, I THINK it MAY be one of those. Not for certain though.

      ^^^Wrong!

The parking lamp relay is on the paasenger-side near the VAF attached to the inner fender skirt.
As a matter of fact, you might have to remove the VAF to get to it!
When I had issues with my parking lights that was the first thing I checked out!

The VAF is on the passenger side:-) The battery is on the driver side. It's right behind the headlight attached to the inner fender skirt. You may have to remove the battery tray/battery to get at it easily. You can get at it, but you'd have to have skinny arms.

wrestler3025, I found my miss type 8 mins before you did!
Let me consult my Ford - Electrical & Vacuum Troubleshooting Manual
Let's see, driver-side near the battery we have:
            Main Relay
Forward of that, near the inner fender skirt we have a cluster of three, or two if in US:
Daytime running Lamp Relay (can. Only)
            Headlamp relay
            Cooling Fan relay

and opposite that we have another cluster of three relays:
            A/C relay
WO throttle AC cut off relay
            Condenser fan relay

No, don't see a Parking lamp relay!

            Let see on the passenger-side
My my, what do we have here; Connector number 138 "RF corner of engine compartment, on fender apron".

Let me see if I can get these old eyes to focus on this small type.
            It says "Parking lamp relay"

            Imagine that!:p

Driver side. Passenger side. On this side of the pond, it appears the pasenger holds the steering wheel!

Hahaha nice one Bathtub tom :-) Well BBQ you might as well check the relays on both sides (parking and headlights) haha.

Hate to admit it, but he's right, for a change, check both parking relay and headlamp relay.

My issue was strange headlights but no parking lights.
Relay was fine would correctly engage and disengage.
actually if its quiet, when you turn the switch to "parking lights" you can hear the relay(or should) it engage.
Should be able to locate it just from it sound if it is working.
But still I had no Parking lights.
Direct connection and got parking lights.
So bulbs and circuitry fine, so I assumed a bad ground or connection between the relay and fuse box.
After tracking down as many of those as I could still no go!
Swapped out the battery and "bam" everything worked fine.
                  Still can't explain it!
Because I have the battery in Blue and he runs fine!

Is it possible the light switch on the column is bad?

it could be...everything else on the car is...except all the stuff I've already replaced that is...but I have all the other lights when it is switched off, so I don't know.
