Speedo/Odo died while driving at high speeds..?

Okay so I had my little 93 L Auto floored. I was going faster than the speedometer max of 140. then the needle bounced around a few times from zero to 140 and back again and then came to a rest at 0. It hasnt moved since.... No idea what I did or how to start fixing it, or if a mechanic can easily fix this for cheap?

Suggestions?

Could have stripped the speedo gear in the trany; i'd check that first. If both your speedo and odo stopped at the same time thats more likely. pull the speedo gear out of the trany, if the white plastic teeth look OK, spin it by hand and see if the speedo moves at all (you may need to pull the cluster out and watch the end of the cable that goes into the cluster).

If the teeth are good maybe you broke the cable or stripped the T off the end of the cable.

same thing happened to me. Take the gear out and if the teeth are chewed up or if you take and spin the gear, watch the top where the speedometer cable goes in and see if it spins also, if not its busted. I went thru two of them in last 6 months winding it out.

Your speedometer controls the odometer, which is why both of them stopped at the same time.

Make sure the cable isn't pulled off the back of the cluster.

If you check the cable and it's ok, it could also be that you broke off the needle on the speedo. That happened to mine, either way it's an easy fix, so don't go to a mechanic.
