  • 'Jerky' throttle on B3 Carb + Coolant Leak

    PROBLEM 1. Jerky Accelerator
    The symptoms
    - when accelerator, changing up/down gears whilst still having foot on throttle/accelerator the car can jerk a lot, as though it's slightly bunny hopping. Makes for a jerky ride at slow speeds around town when changing gears and speeding up and down occurs repetitively. The car drives fine out on the highway at constant speed without fail. Ive had this problem ever since i bought the car a year ago, but it's gradually getting worse. The car idles fine, never drops revs, and the accelerator never gets totally 'stuck' ,

Im going to assume it's probably the accelerator cable connecting the pedal to throttle butterfly??? It wont be carb related cos it idles fine.. and never drops/alternates revs, right?

    PROBLEM 2.
    - My car intermittantly is leaking Coolant. it's leaking from the left side of the block somewhere before the return line to the radiator. It happens intermittantly -- weather temperature doesnt appear to be a factor cos it happens when it's cold or hot. Engine temps stay constant at about 1/3 on the temp guage. When it does leak, i can see that it's dropping off the bottom of the sump, so it's leaking somewhere from the engine and down the edge of the engine and dripping off the sump, odd!

Anyone know where it'll be leaking from, and how to fix it?

Mine was leaking like that and there was a little pinhole in the little bypass hose (the one that bends over 90 degrees or so I believe).

As far as the jerky acceleration, if you figure it out PLEASE LET ME KNOW! I have been dealing with that for a year and a half now....I think I've developed a twitch from it, ha

Jerky acceleration: can you hook up a vacuum guage and rev the engine to simulate acceleration and deceleration?

both of my cars have done this. when i changed the plug wires, it made it better at least, sometimes it made it go away completely. but it always runs funny when its not warmed up still. i would try plug wires and dist. cap and rotor.

Not sure what is going on with the Coolant leak --- it's stopped doing it!

AS for the jerkyness, i think it's the plugs. I checked the plugs last night and they looked ok apart from a bit of carbon deposit build up. I put them back after inspecting, straight away the car now drives smoother.

I've got some brand new NGK's i'll put in on the weekend when i do an oil change. is there any way of cleaning the spark plug sockets prior to putting the spart plugs in ?

use anti seize compound. i've had trouble with the aluminum threads coming out with the plug before. its like a dollar around here.

I bought a new 1988 festiva 30 years ago. At about 4000 miles it started doing what you described. Took it back to the ford dealership, under warranty, they repaired it. They said the clutch position sensor switch had went bad. They replaced it and also adjusted the timing. Never did it again. This may be your problem. I know my present 88 model does this every now and then, but only does it when i leave my foot resting on the clutch pedal sometimes, especially between first and second gears.
