So i was driving th ecar toady. pulled up to a stop light and when it turned green went to put the car into first and go and there is nothing.... the stick is loose and can move in any direction.. it is like it is stuck in third. I still have to push the clutch in to get it to start, and while the car is running i have to have the clutch pushed in to rev the car, so i know that the clutch and pedal are not bad.,... any help quicky would be greatly appricaited... have to drive 100 miles on monday for a funeral..

Maybe your shifter assembly is loose and it can't pull it out of third. That or the syncros are gone.

i would look under the car and have someone move the shifter around, if averything appears ok then i would assume your problem is in the tranny itself

If no one from the future stops you from doing it, how bad of a decision can it really be?

i can move the shifter around... i am guessing that it is the shift linkage.... but how hard is it to get to that, and if something is wrong with it how do i go about fixing this?

Not hard at all to get to the shift linkage.
Just jack the car up, get under, and....there it is. Middle of the car.
My bushings were gone, but they didn't cause a problem. I mean, the stick was loose, but it still worked fine.

its probably the detent inside the transmission..not hard to weld back together where the always crack, if you dont mind puling the trans and splitting the case.....

well... we jacked up the car, looked at the linkages, the one going from the shifter to the connecting linkage to the tranny is good... the actual linkage itself still is in good condition.. so tomorrow we are going to have to crack the tranny and what not to see what happened on the inside... anyone got any pics or pages from a repair book to help me out.. i know in the past people have scanned pics of the repair manuals, however I can't seem to find a repair manual for the car where i am located...

any help as far as being inside the tranny and all that good stuff would be greatly appreciated....

                  thanks guys

                    inside the tranny

It is most likely the shift gate that failed. Here are two photos of what it looks like inside the Mazda G series tranny. It is located near the axles, in the region the diff is located. The diff probably has to come out to get at it, after you open the case. While not identical, the e-series in the Festiva will look very similar when you open it up. You have to open the case, and watch for all the little ball bearings and springs that want to fly around, unless you remove those through the access screws first. I have not found an on line e-series manual, but here is a link to the g-series, which should provide a lot of guidance. A search on shift gate on this forum will also give you more info.

The case is aluminum and the gate is steel. You're probably going to have to take it to a good welding shop to tig weld it, if it is the case. In which case the cost of a junkyard tranny is likely to be lower. You can either just use it, or swap the case of course. But it can be welded more easily if it is actually part of the shift gate bracket that is broken.

Check out his welding job thread thats running simultaneously.

so i must just be very unlucky... we put the tranny back together found out when we tried taking the vehicle out of fifth gear and it "popped" out again, so then we took the tranny back out and found out that the shift gate was broke, so I took it and welded it, now when we put it all back together, the clutch won't engage, as well as now we cant shift it in to any gear, and it is like the shifter won't even go to the right, the position to put the shifter in 5th and R. So any one got help for me????

                              thanks
