  • Carbed troubles

I am helping Spiko with his car. It is a 88 carbed with a manaul trans. The problem is when you try to drive it and place it under a load the car wants to buck on take off and has no power when driving. You can push the pedal down and nothing. It just goes flat, no power no reving it does nothing. Tried plating with the timing, even tried another dist. When sitting still in the driveway it will free rev without any trouble. I am thinking it might be the carb, but the carb came off another engine that it supposedly ran OK on. Any thoughts?

When mine was having all of it's ultimately terminal carb problems, when I changed the cat that problem went away. Never was able to resolve idle/timing issue. But the problem you are describing went away on mine with a new cat converter. Don't know how old the one is that's on the car now.

I hope it is not the same problem my son has on his Omni.....runs fine sitting there...revs no problem....but if you try to drive it.... it dies ,bucks...no power like you are just flooding it out. Turns out it has a dead cylinder. Did a comp check and it was less then half the compression as the other 3. But while it sat there you would never know there was a problem

Replaced it already. The engine ran good before we pulled it from the doner car.

mines a carbed 4spd. throttle only matters from none to half. when you floor it, nothing happens. and it always buck in 2nd. i just learned to deal with it. its WAY more dependable than my truck.
it'll do the 1/8 in 13.7, spin tires, and make all my drunk buddies giggle.

I'm thinking its in the fuel delivery, I have changed dist. And tried it without an air filter.

I have to agree. Check the tank sump and the fuel pump output. Watch the float sightglass while accelerating.

O2 sensor would most likely give a 'check engine' light, I'm thinking vacuum leak or vacuum hose connected wrong. I've got a FSM, but no scanner.
