I connected all the vacuum lines identical to my car which runs great. I am going to checksome hings tomarrow and see what happens.

had this exact problem with a carbed 89 i had. it was a bad coil, replaced coil everything was fine. on another carbed one i had the coil was weak and made it almost impossible to start if it was less n 50 degrees F, weird surging stuttering issues. again once i replaced the coil car was fine. one thing to note, i did put a tester on both coils and it was reading fine both times. nothing indicated i had a bad coil other n the fact the car wouldnt go. not sure why but with a fresh coil my mileage also improved.
is not sposed ta do that...

festivas are known for weak coils. they will test "good", but place them in the ignition system, and they fail. this is especially true if they are WARM.

Brian, does the engine get really hot when you try to drive it?

That's what happened to Muttstiva. She ran okay maybe 75% of the time upon first starting. Then, lost power and wouldn't go. She idled fine, engine got really hot. I had replaced the cat, the fuel pump and the filter.

I finally gave up. I just don't want to mess with carbs any more. Same with most shops.

Kinda like most vets won't treat dinosaurs any more.

My 89 carbed had a similar problem and it turned out that the vacuum advance canisters on the distributor were both leaking. I had a devil of a time finding a good one in the bone yard but eventually it was fixed and ran great. My other guess would be clogged fuel filter but taking a look at the color of the spark plug gaps should give you an idea of whether it is running lean or not.

Good luck and keep us posted when you sort out the actual problem.

Wel worked on the car some more today. I have either swapped out or replaced most of the parts and still it has the same problem. When you try to drive it the car bucks/jerks and is almost impossible to start off driving. When driving along it feels like it has no power for most of the throttle position and goes completely flat when put to the floor. If the car is sitting in neuteral it idles really nice and you can rev it up OK unless you floor it all the way then it seems like it runs out of gas. I think I will put the carb off my car on it next and see if that fixes it.

Well I took a known good cab from my car and installed it on Spiko's car and it runs great now. So now to get him a good carb so I can get mine back. I think I have memorized where all carbed vacuum lines go now!!

Argh, I guess I'm gonna have to pull the carb off of mine.....I tried once and got nowhere. I was pulling on vaccum hoses and stuff and they wouldn't move and I didn't want to break anything. Is there an easy way to take one off? I'm scared of all those connections and hoses, ha

If anyone else has a spare carb sitting around PLEASE let me know. I'd rather rebuild another one off the car while I'm still driving it since I've never done one before.

Skipped timming belt or something of the sort....poor tension.

Does the car have a park/neutral switch?? Even though the car is in gear does the HCU still think it is in P or N?

Just some guesses.....carbs that idle well but hav no power on the run is a typical sign of fuel/air delivery or poor advance.....hmm...now I'm think maybe the coil or ignitor takes a dump at higher RPM.
