        does the car overheat?

one time after re-installing the engine i had an air lock in the antifreeze system, and that caused there to be no heat in the car, but the car would overheat

              possibilities

              1) Make sure heat is getting to the heater core. Feel hose for heat between engine and firewall (assuming your cooling system is pressurized).

              if not, then

              2) Your heater core could be plugged up with crud.

Drain antifreeze, Pull off hoses on firewall and flush rad, engine and heater core in opposite directions with a hose. Relace antifreeze.

              else

              3) your vent cable operation may not be working properly. It should open the vents to the heater core in the heat position. Check for a kink in the cable due to a stuck door.

My previous experience with box store t'stats is that they are full open at the rated temp rather than the conventional start to crack at the rated temp.

In the past couple of years I have installed at least three (AZ's) that opened way to early and could never generate any cabin heat. I'm a slow learner.

ok. no heat from vents you say. i owned a silver 89L that produced great heat from the vents, car had one of the best heaters id ever experienced short of a 80s gm full size sedan. my first festy, also carbed had a good heater, but with the afore mentioned cold air from the vents, my 90 fi had a horrible heater till i put in the mazda thermo, and then it worked ok. makes me wonder if te previous owner of my silver one monkeyd with it, he had a small fleet of them tere were three in the garage in various stages of repair and 2 more outside, plus a large assortment of spare parts. used them for rural mail and newspaper delivery. makes me wonder...
is not sposed ta do that...
