When I turn on my heater small chunks of sponge come out along with very small pieces you can see floating in the air. I assume this is the padding in the vents. I plan on replacing my heater core in about a week or so. I was thinking about removing the spongy stuff but I dont know what to replace it with. As anyone ever replaced the sponge, because I'm getting tired of breathing it in.

Once you open up the heater core....you should be able to locate the source of the dried out foam. You can repalce it with some foam insulation that has a sticky back. Look in the insulation section of the local hardware store where they sell weather stripping.
