1991 festiva 5 speed CV Shaft seal

I have a 1991 Festiva w/ a 5 speed tranny

Transmission fluid is leaking at the drivers side seal where the CV shaft inters the transmission.

Can this seal be replaced from the outside of the tranny, or does the tranny have to be opened up in order to replace this seal?

Also I went to checkers auto parts to see what type of fluid the 5 speed manual trnsmission takes. I was told I could use straight 80 weight or mercron auto tranny fluid. Is this correct?

Any help with these questions would be greatly appreciated

i had the same issued with my g25mr, you could probably do it with the trans still in the car but you will have to pull the axles out and probably the control arms. to get the seal out is simple, pry it out with a screw driver Now getting it back in is the hard part!! i ended up buying like 4 or 6 seals, every time i went to drive one in the edges would curl up and peel from the bushing. I gave up and a friend did it he said he just used a big socket

You can use a large socket to drive the seal in properly. I did my two trannies a couple years ago, and used a large socket out of my: http://tinyurl.com/6jfwa3 It worked like a charm on the first time. The part number at Advance is: 222238 $5.99 each and it's the same for both sides.
The transmissions call for Dexron III/Mercon fluid.

Once you pry out the old seal carefully, you can use it to drift in the new one.
Use the old seal between the hammer and the new seal to avoid damaging the new seal. Stop before the old seal gets lodged in, and use some kind of drift to finish positioning the new seal.
It ain't rocket science!
