seals questions

89 L carbed 4 spd. she burnt an exhaust valve on me right after st louistiva, and i've got a spare head, so i'm just gonna change the head. my questions are these:
1) can you replace the front crankshaft seal without removing the oil pump? mine is leaking ever so slightly and i'd like to replace it IF i dont have to take off the oil pump to do it.
2) how do you replace the valve stem seals? my gasket set comes with them and i'd like to replace them especially since i've got them already.

how would you go about this? just poke a hole in the old seal and press the new one in?

The seal can be pulled by driving some sheet metal screws into the seal. Atleast 2 180° apart. Be sure to insert the screws 1/2 way between the ID and Od of the seal. Using your fingers on the head of the screws you can begin to wiggle the seal out. Once it is far enough out you can use a small pair of needle nose or dykes to pull it the rest of the way out or cut it in smaller pieces.

THE IMPORTANT THING IS NOT TO SCORE AND METAL....OIL PUMP HOUSING...OR...CRANK SHAFT.

Lube the sealing surfaces and new seal with clean motor oil or greas prior to insertion. Insertion requires even tapping wit a wood dowel or socket of proper size. Getting it statrted evenly and continuation of even insertion is key.

Once the valve springs have been removed...a little moly grease or clean motor oil on the new stem seal is required. Slide the seals down the valve stem and place them evenly on the head. They can be tapped into place with a properly fitting deep wall socket. Tap slowly and lightly, not alot of force is required. If you tap lightly, you will notice a slight change in pitch when the are bottomed out.

I just did the valve stem seals on mine as well. Once you get the valve spring compressor on the spring, place a small strong magnet on top of the valve stem so you don't drop one of the keepers. My valve stem compressor slipped off one of the springs and shot a keeper 70 feet away. I found my magnet and used it after that.
