  • How do I remove wiring harness

    Hey Guys and Girl,

Before I even try to attempt it:

Can you remove the engine wiring harness from the engine bay without removing the drivers side fender? If i disconnect everything can I pull it all into the car, or will some stuff get stuck?

Since I am running a standalone I want to remove all the extra wiring and trace some other wires, just figure it would be easier to completely remove the harness to do all of this.

Well from what I watched Skeeter do @ Festiva Madness, The fender must come off.
Sorry. If you want all the details ask Skeeter.

WELLllll that would suck, because I can't remove my fender since it is molded into my sideskirts.....

Worst case scenario I cut the harness in half, and then have to redo all the wiring I need.

You know I'd love to see you go through all that pain and suffering!

But, I suspect you can pull the fender liner and remove the harness from the clip that would otherwise prevent you from pulling it through.
Even then Skeeter and I had to thread it through carefully to get it out and I'm sure it will be much harder with the fender on and by yourself!

If I remember corresctly...from when I installed fog lights yesars ago. I exposed the wire harnes by removing the plastic spach gaurd in side the fron driver's side wwheel well.

Also I would say yes because in a typical assembly plant the entire body show up on the line.....less doors and glass...and the entire harness is then installed. No pins are inserted into headers at that time....to much potential for mistakes. The Harness are complete and tested prior to installation.

Remove the splash gaurd and undo the bundle inside the car where it plugs to the fuse bock/ecm and such and pull it out. It can be done.

You should be able to do it w/o pulling the the fender; as others have suggested I'd at least pull the splash guard, that should be enough.

Keep in mind the engine harness, lights, etc are all taped together into one large harness... I haven't pulled the outer layer off of the harness I just got yet, I'm hoping that the engine harness is separated from the headlights etc by another layer of tape under the main outside layer, but I'm not sure.
After I get through this and next weeks exams thats one of the things I want to see about.

Good luck with the standalone install; I hope to be able to mess around with that at some point in the future. Its a great learning opportunity!!

Speaking of harness...do you guys know if a say 95 or 98 Aspire would fit Festi? I wanna BP it and I got a carbed 1.3L. Anyways, I found 2 Aspires in the junkyard and thought of pulling the harness out? Any thoughts?

                  thnx

You do not want an aspire harness. Aspires are mass air metered cars not vaned. voltage references from other sensors may or may not be the same either. I would get the 90-93 festiva harness, or the protege/escort harness matching the engine you have. I have an aspire and will have to pretty much turn it into a festiva to upgrade engines. I havent decided what to do, probably get another festiva, because the aspire runs so well and has been saving me a lot of gas money.

I just removed and replaced the wiring harness in my 93L last weekend and I can tell you first-hand that removing the fender skirt is absolutely worth the time and effort it will save you when you are fishing wires through. I also removed the fender and it went off and back on very easily. My fingers are still sore from releasing all of the connectors and carefully fishing wires around. Good luck. It took me 1 hour to remove the donor at the pick-and-pull and 3 hours to install the new one. The biggest frustration was the getting the harness out from under the dashboard. Patience pays.

Fenders on festys DO go on and off easy, but OP -has- some fancy bodywork and doesn't wanna jack it all up.

As far as headaches, nah...just an extra festy shell alying around i get yelled at daily to get rid of asap and haven't...

b8kedbeans, is only the engine harness different or did you replace all wiring from the taillights forward including under dash and it all?

The OP didn't do the bodywork...

You'll be able to do it with the fender in place... You'll just have to be careful with it. I know it's a lot easier with it off (I replaced the full harness on Casper when I got it)... I believe everything had to be pulled into the car itself, as the fuse box won't fit through the hole in the firewall.
