I'm a believer in LED's. I put a 9 inch strip of red LED's in my tach/speedo cluster & just wired 'em into where the little grain-o-wheat bulbs go on the back of the circuit board. What a difference! They're mega-bright! I have to keep the dimmer turned all the way down most of the time!!

Never had a problem with the brightness on mine. Not to ask a potentially stupid question, but you do have the brightness adjusted all the way up, right? Only asking cause my Mom complained about the same problem in the aspire she used to have, and that was the problem, she had the little dial turned most of the way down, and never thought about playing with it. lol. I like the LED idea, tho.

the light bar on the top has a green lens over it I believe.....if you pull the speedo out and then pop off the light bar...you can remove that lens and they should be a lot brighter. The regular speedos have a 4 light system and I put it in my tach combo and I have to keep the dimmer all the way turned down or the speedo reflects off my windshield almost like a HUD system...lol."FLTG4LIFE" @FINALLEVEL , "PBH"

A very reasonable question. Yep, I made sure the adjustment pot was all the way up when I evaluated the light output. I've got some difficulty with night vision anyways, so since I had the instrument cluster out to do the tach/speedo swap I figured I may as well put the LED strip in place. I chose red LED's for a couple of reasons, but other colors are readily available.
Let me see if I have some pics captured of the LED upgrade and if so I'll post them.
I got the LED strip from a local autoparts place... since senility is setting in big-time, I don't recall which store: PepBoys, AutoZone or AdvanceAuto. There's a 9 inch strip and also a 15 inch strip. The 9 in. fits quite nicely in the instrument cluster and (serendipity) it has a pressure sensitive adhesive. The brightness of the strip prompted me to glue down a strip of flat black non-skid shelf covering on the flat part of the instrument cluster bezel to keep windshield reflections to a minimum.
