  • Ignition starter switch

    Hello,

I have a 89 festiva. Last week I put a new battery in it and then I was driving it one night to work and all of a sudden i smelled something burning , all of a sudden the car just dies and i see smoke. I lift the hood to see the positive battery cable on fire, not up near battery though down toward the engine the cable was laying on a part on the motor. Well i took it to the repair man and he tells me that the ignition starter switch is what made this happen, well i looked all over for this part, everyone kept trying to sell me the part you put the key in, but that is not the part..i loooked for days with no luck at all..well finally i looked under 89 mazda model cars and to my surprize their was a mazda called the mx-6 in 89 and they had the same part on it as the 89 festiva, or it looks to be the same..the part got to me this morning and the guy at the repair shop is working on it now, so i'm crossing my fingers...has anyone else on here had a problem with this part??

??? not really sure what you're talking about. The ignition switch IS the part you put the key in. Starter solenoid, perhaps? That's located on the starter. Any pics? I can tell better from that.

Also, please edit your profile to add your location. That way, someone local might be able to help you directly. Thanks!

        I'm a little confused also.
Ignition typicall refers to spark plug stuff and Starter is starter.....they're not related. The only place they're near each other is at the key switch.

yes that is the part and napa had one for a mazda mx-6 that fit my car and the part is called an ignition starter switch at napa...after i got that on i had to fix the burnt wires..the wires that were running along with the positive battery cable , i guess it was part of wiring harness...four of those wires in there burnt ..i fixed them and it started right up..
