Sorry about the rhyme, but the description is accurate. The latch hook is stuck in place(closed position) and does not freely move. When I took a closer look at the latch, there is box shaped piece underneath the hook that looks bent like nobody's business. It's wired shut for now, but I'd like to tackle this this weekend. If anyone has done this repair before, any advice would be appreciated. Is this part I can fix/buy or do I have to pull it from a yard? The locking mechanism still works and the lever to release the latch works as well.

Had the same problem yeras ago.
Remove the latch...two bolts if i remember...and you will have to pull the interior panel to unhook the rodd from the key switch.
In my case...I found galling...a burr....between the lever and the bracket. Moved the lever out of the way and dremmel'd the burr out of the way.
