My original intention was to simply pull the motor & trans from my '93 5sp, rebuild the growling tranny and reinstall, along w/new clutch set, timing belt and water pump. The goal was to get this done before first snowfall so I could park my low mileage 04 Mustang GT before winter.
I had the motor/trans out in a day and took the tranny to a local shop for a rebuild ($320 including all new bearings and seals). Got everything back and was preparing to install when I decided to replace the plugs since they had 120K on them and I had never replaced them since I bought the car. 3 out of 4 were a piece of cake..........but #1 plug will not budge.
I had been soaking the plugs with PB Blaster for a week in preparation. My electric impact will not budge it and a 1/2" drive 3' breaker bar won't budge it!
At this point I have decided that it is more likely that the plug will break off before it will ever unscrew. I decided to pull the head now (since the motor is still out of the car) and take it to a local machine shop and let them fix it. It may also be possible that once the head is off the PB Blaster may do a better job working into the threads from the combustion side.
Question: Are the head bolts on a B3 re-usable or do I need a new set like a lot of newer engines require?
