Hi Guys , A few months ago my tranny got to where I could not keep it in gear in 4th an 5th and every where I have to go is at least 50miles so found a trans out of a 88 that had been setting for a number of years ,installed it an replaced the trany oil ,works ok but sounds like a old school bus wineing,pulled the case off my 93 tranny an found a bad bearing on one of the cluster shafts ,out side of that every thing looks ok, What I would like to get is some more info about it, Kinda working with out knowing just what I'am doing ,Been turning wrenchs for 45 years but first time on one of these cars,Would Appreciate any info about this. Are you asking about the bad transmission from your car, or the one from the '88 that you installed?
From my experience, that whine is the input shaft bearing going bad.
Mine made that noise for a while and eventually started making horrible grinding sounds. A few weeks afterward it stopped going into gear. I ended up selling the car, and the new owner pulled the tranny and showed me how the bearing chewed itself up.
