  • High pitch squeeling.

When I start the car up in the morning after sitting overnight, it starts normally and I pull out to the street. Then when I turn onto the street and start accelerating I get this high pitched squeeling sound. If I back off on the throttle it goes away, but sometimes come back for a second or two when I get on the gas.

The rest of the day the car will be perfectly fine. This only happens after a complete 100% cooldown and then only for a few seconds.

It's been doing this for a while now but is getting worse as the tempatures drop.

    Any ideas?

Sounds like the alternator belt. Tightening it may fix it. Check the condition and replace if it's looking worn.

Yes - check your belt that could be alittle loose. Also might not be a bad idea to check your battery. Could be after the car sits all night the battery is loosing its charge and the alternator has to work extra hard to recharge.

Last time I took a look at the belt it was okay but I'll give it another check. The battery starts it up fine but I haven't any idea how old it is so I'll give it a check as well.

Sometimes mine squeals if I hit a big enough puddle just the right way.

Belts chirp, bearings squeal. I'd suspect the alternator bearings.
If they are going the squealing will get worse. If it is the bearings
it's often cheaper to have the alternator overhauled at an auto

I disagree, had a loose ALT belt and it most definitely did not chirp!
It squealed to the point other drivers and pedestrians would turn to look!
Adjusted the belt a little tighter and all was well with the world.
That's been some 20+K miles ago!
Be careful not to over tighten the belt, as it will cause your ALT bearings to fail prematurely.
But, if it is a bearing then I do agree its time for a complete rebuild of the unit; bearing regulator, brushes, etc.

I agree with Pu241. I had a alternator belt that squealed until the belt warmed up enough to grip. Then I would start driving, and the thing would squeal again until it got warmer. after replacing the belts several times(first time didn't get it tight enough, and both accessory belts came off - d'oh) the squeal went away

just fixed that exact issue on Hula. Cold start, she squealed for a minute or so, would squeal under light accel for several minutes afterward. Tightened the belt due to excessive freeplay, issue gone.

Went and tightened up the belt. Did it a little bit too tight the first time, backed it off a bit and no issues now. Thanks for the help,

Some other thoughts on things that would squeel....

                          Water pump
                          Timing belt tensioner
                          Cam

Most likely the belt....whenever I have a squeel...the first thing I do is take the belt off and clean al the pullies with some mineral spirits or laquer thinner then inspect the belt for glazing. It never hurts to clean and lightly scuff the contact areas of the belt.

Spray some belt dressing on it. It that cures it, then its the belt. I think it is, been there done it many times.
