oil light on at idle???

today my oil came on so I shut ut down and checked the level and it was up so I drove to closest parts store and spun on a new filter and added a bit of oil and it is still on at idle.

car is a 93 with 200 k

leaks a bit of oil but no smoke good power ect.

what should I do????

Could be poor oil pressure due to a worn oil pump. When its spinning slower it cant keep pressure up.

May be a bad oil pressure sending unit.

on the way home I was doing 65mph and it was coming on and then off .

where is the oil pump and should i consider changing it??

have a mechanic check the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge. There's a good possibility that you main bearings are wiped out, which will cause you to loose oil pressure.

I have a brand new auto meter gauge (oil) that I will install under the hood and see what it says.

Always fill the new oil filter before spinning it on! And pull the coil wire and spin the engine it till you have pressure. It's messy but at least you know your bearings are wet before it fires.

the oil filter goes in sideways thus spilling the oil out of the filter. why would you fill it out than?

I've pulled engines apart that have sat idle for 10-20 years and they still had a crankshaft full of oil and plenty of oil on the crank journals.

It's best to get oil pressure up as quickly as possible after an engine sits idle, is rebuilt or the oil is changed for the simple reason that cylinder walls and cam/lifters on push rod engines are lubed by oil slung off the crqnkshaft. Therefore, it's not a good idea to crank an engine with the coil wire out. It's not turning fast enough to sling the oil.

I do this also. While your changing the oil fill the filter up with oil. Itll soak into the filter. I usually filll it a couple times before putting it on. A little bit of oil may spill out but not alot. This helps prevent a dry sump condition when you start the car the first time after the change and gets the oil going just a little sooner.

Check the sending unit first.

Really? I used a wrench...dont quote me on this but I think it was a 17mm ???

They make a socket that fits it, but I can see where a regular socket might work. I'm cheap, so I'd probably just use a small pipe wrench or channel locks. Anything I could find to do the job. Harbor Freight or Northern or any McAutoPartsStore would have the socket for pretty cheap.
