12 Inch Tire Pressure

The tire decal on my 90 Festiva is unreadable.. Anybody have reccomendations for ideal tire pressure. I've heard 35 on front 30 on rear...

I keep all 4 at 32 psi.

It's a good compromise between comfort and fuel economy.

Jim -- I think my manual for our '90 Festiva L Plus says it should be at 29 pounds for each tire, but I go about 32 all around, seems to drive great !
I have a shop manual that says the 29 pounds too ...... and, ours have the stock 12 inch rims with new tires on at present.

I run at least sidewall rating in my tires. Im running junkyard tires right now though, and 50 psi in all 4. Two are rated 35 psi and two are 44. Rides a little rough but im shooting for mpg.

is it safe to run 50psi in a tire thats only rated for 35?

Not per-say "safe". They test them at factory to hold way more that the rating on the side for safety/defect reasons. Same way they test welds on air tanks, but only set the max holding psi to 150. My dad use to be vice president of midwest products before they sold out to Quest manufacturing. They tested the tanks at over 300 psi.

if you have douglas 12's from Walmart or where ever....they are rated at 45psi on the sidewall.

The door sticker on my '91 L says 32 psi for front and rear for normal driving conditions. For heavy load conditions, 38-40psi is required.

Personally, I run somewhere around 32-35 psi and it runs great. However, I get some sliding in the rain. Of course, I do have some pretty beat up tires, too.

look door post for inflation guide for stock tires (Yokahama brand?) 29 psi in winter, 32 in summer. check when tires are cold. tires heat up in use and air expands increasing pressure so the reading then will be inconsistent.

Since probably none of you here still have the original tires on your car, or even the original spec tires, always consult the tire sidewall for the proper inflation pressure. The door sticker and the owners manual are for original spec tires.

I do have stock wheels and tires. I just ordered replacement tires last week. They should be here today. The sidewall numbers is always the safe max psi the tire can hold for long periods of time without making a really big bang. You can run at this psi, but I wouldn't recommend it, it can cause uneven tire wear, a rough ride and spin problems in rain, snow and ice.

Some one else already said it, but the factory specs are 29psi summer, 32 winter, 38 psi under heavy load. If your running low profiles, the presure should be slightly higher.

That pressure is for old tires that came with the car....you should be using the rating on the sidewall of whatever brand of tire you buy these days to determine what the pressure is set at. If you inflate to max there should be no issue with wear other then normal...the uneven wear comes from under or over inflation...that is why you should stay within the ranges on the side of the tire you are running....not what your book or door sticker tells you. Those were the ratings 15-20 years ago depending on the year of your car.
