5spd only has 4 gears

Hey guys,

Just bought another festiva. It is suppose to be a 5 spd, but when I took it for a drive tonight it seems to be missing 5th gear. I am just wondering if anyone can help. I wasn't able to fully test it because of it being on main street without tags...

It feels like it shifts into 5th gear, but there is absolutely nothing there. No grinding no noise, no feeling. I can even start the car in 5th gear without it doing anything.

I have never had a 4spd but I am just wondering if the owner possibly put a 4psd in it and didn't tell me. Can you shift into the 5th position in a 4spd car? I am guessing no as that has to do with the shift gate right?

Any help would be great.

Weird... I am 99% sure you cant shift into 5th in a 4spd.

My old carb'd festy wouldn't even go to where 5th is.

Go under the car...check how many electric switches it has in the front of the tranny itself. The side of the clutch lever....my 5 speed has only one...I believe a 4 speed has 2 of them?

My other 5 spds have two... I am guessing it is some how missing 5th gear, possibly totally stripped it without damaging the other gears? Is that possible?

Last year I bought a junk 1992 Festiva the owner had swaped in a 4sp because he could not find a 5sp,maybe thats what happen!

Only problem the orignial owner said it was a 5spd to me.... but I why would it shift into 5 gears, unless it was a 4spd with a 5spd shift gate, or a 5 spd with a stripped gear?

Might be a 5 speed shift gate in a four speed. Or maybe the 5th gear is missing??

My four speed won't engage into 5th either.

you mean you can shift into that position and nothing is there in your car too? I am thinking something is screwy with the shift gate or the shift linkage, but I can shift nice into all the other gears.

My buddys buddy swapped a festy 4sp in his 97 aspire. Anything is possible. He couldnt find a proper 5 speed.

No i mean I'm with the guy that posted a couple above....i can't even get my gear shift into where the 5 slot would be. I think someone has either opened the casing on yours and it is a 5 speed

My 89L is a 4 speed and will not go into a false 5th gear at all. Did you search the last couple owners posts to see if they had any trans troubles?

On my old Festiva the seller said it was a 5spd, but when shifted into 5th it seemed like it went into 3rd. Something was messed up with it.
