Get more than one key made and hide a spare somewhere on the car, that's on the outside where it can be got at if you lock yourself out. My spare keye is ..., oh wait, I don't want to post that on the Internet, do I?

Glad you have resolution to your problem. I Wonder if my aspire is the same. The actual passenger lock is messed up, as is the hatch.

Hijack: I wonder if locksmiths have to swear some sort of oath like doctors and civil service? I've held myself to pretty high moral standards along the way but always have the worst thoughts. I should try writing.

Actually in IL you just need to take a 20hour class and get your perc card. Covers security locksmithing and a couple of other things. I have one cause i'm a security officer.
If you can't fix it with a hammer you have an electrical problem.

all jap cars use the passenger lock for the code, if you ever loose you keys, the code is there and any locksmith worth their beans can make you new keys.

            I lucked out

A friend of mine used to own a pair of Festiva's. He still had his old keys and I tried them out. One of them worked perfect!

Thought i was in the clear

I thought I was in the clear with the key from my friend, but now it won't do a thing in the ignition. It will open all the doors & hatch, but won't even turn the ignition cyl. I sprayed some lube in there to hopefully free it, but doesn't seem to budge. Any thoughts?

Your best bet will be the locksmith route. I just had to do this with the festy I picked up a few weeks ago. Had to call around to a few locksmiths to find one that would cut a new key, and found one that works out of his house in my old neighborhood! Took him the passenger side lock and he cut me a new one using the code off of it. Charged me $25

                    Ignition too?

                    Lane,
Will the locksmith key code on the pass lock cyl also include the ignition?

It will as long as it has the passenger side lock it originally came with. Hopefully that lock was never switched out for any reason. I just took a chance that mine had the original lock. I doubt yours has been changed unless it has a new/different passenger side door on it or something of that nature.

the ign lock uses several extra teeth to secure the car from theft: go to the locksmith!
that code includes the extra teeth for the ign.

                          Key 1/2 works

So I went to the locksmith and they looked my key up in the book and cut me a new key. Got home and it works great in all door locks, but doesn't do a thing in the ignition. I'm kinda po'd cause I'd like to get the car goin again. What confuses me is that the old key worked and then all of a sudden it doesn't. I don't even drive this car so I'm not sure how the key could have worn out.

So maybe it's your ignition that's messed up? The key I had made works in my ignition, but sometimes I have to jiggle it around a little to get it to work.

Yea, I've been jiggling the one I had and no luck. Sprayed WD-40 in there too. So then I went and got a new one made from the lock cyl and it only works in the doors.

Wow, that's crazy! Well hope you get it figured out. I'm in the process of getting my other one running too. Got the key made and now I'm trying to figure out what's keeping it from starting.
