  • 5spd transmission electrical wires

Ok, there are 2 electrical connector or outputs on my 5spd transmission. 1 is below the Right side output cv shaft (has 2 green wires), and the other is below the clutch release lever and also has 2 green wires coming out of it.
What are each of these connectors? I did the auto to manual swap, and wondering where these connectors go? One is the back up lights, but which one? and then what does the other go to?

-Escort GT 91 donor car with BP, G5M-R tranny to be dropped in the little guy...

As near as I can tell the one below the CV axle output on the driver side is the back up light switch. The only other reference to another switch is a neutral switch but I cannot seem to find an illustration for it. This info came from a 1990 Festiva repair manual so I hope it helps.

I had the one by the CV joint disconnected and my backup lights worked? I presume the one in the front of the tranny is the back up light switch...

yeah, i didn't have my manual earlier today.. but tonight just looked and the backup light switch is on the drivers side front of the trans...
and the other below the Right (passenger) side CV output is the park/neutral switch...
why do you need this on a manual trans? i can see why for an auto as not to start it in gear, but i thought the clutch switch served that function..?
i'll include this in my auto to manual write up soon to come.....

For info, here are the wiring color codes for the wiring harness that disconnects from the automatic transmission tht was just removed from the vehicle. The park/neutral switch wires on the harness are BLK/BLU and BLK/RED, and the back-up light switch is BLK/YEL and RED/YEL.
I am going to spline both the Green wires from the backup light switch on my 5spd trans to the BLK/YEL and RED/YEL to complete the circuit. It won't matter which is which as It just closes the circuit.
          Same for the Park/Neutral Switch..

The one on the passenger side of the transmission if you were stitting in drives seat is the back up light switch and the one in front drivers side is the neutral safety . I need any one of them if you have one , this will be for my back up lights currently have a bolt pluggin the whole any chance you have one?

skimsucka is correct. On my newest festiva the one on the drivers side is cut and I can start the car without pushing in the clutch, not very safe. The other one is the back up lights.

i am looking at the haynes manual now, and it says on page 7A-2 Figure 3.1 for the back-up light is "located on the front side of the transaxle case" which is on the left side (drivers side)... also fig 3.8 shows the electrical connector and that matches mine attached to the 5spd transaxle..
any chance the 88-89 models are different than the 90-93?? I wouldn't think so.

the park/neutral switch is not mentione in chater 7A Manual transaxle, but IS mentioned in 7B for the automatic..... thats where my information about color codes came from..
would these switches be swapped around (ie the front drivers side to the left Lower CV) for the manual to automatic?

when i get home, i'll look on my automatic transaxle thats out and match the connectors.... that will tell me which switch is what for the automatic...

Well here's another suggestion. You could check continuity on the switches when the trans is in neutral and then put it in reverse and check again. I think that it would take the guess work out of it. Just a thought.

Arn't the switches similar? Is it possible you could plug them in back wards and they still work?

Yeah, the switches from what I can tell are very similar, if not identical. I haven't had them out though.. yes, i think it doesn't matter if you have the wires swapped backward as they are continuity switches..

I did just verify that for 5spd transmission, both the neutral switch and back up light switches are identical.
I just pulled both of them from a JY this morning... can't tell a difference.

Both switches are same....all there is, is a little ball sticking out and once its pressed it does it's thing hahahaah...nothing to it. On mine, both the neutral and reverse were same....

Also, how do you get a passenger side and drivers side? I might be missing something? (sorry) The tranny sits in the drivers side. There is the front of the tranny, which faces the front of the car and than there is a neutral switch to the rear of tranny which is under the CV input or closest to the firewall....

Are we all talking about the same thing?
