    X2.

I blew out the headlights and all the fuses in my Isuzu Pup by doing this. The alternator was also damaged, and conveniently decided to die when I was going over a mountain pass.

Go to NAPA and let them test your battery/alt for free.

it's actually not the A/C voltage that wreaks the most havok. It's the voltage spikes that result from removing the load (battery) and the alt output surging, often upwards of 400V.

So FB71, me not being and EE, but knowing a little about the the alternator setup.
We should be seeing pulsed DC on the battery side of the alt/regulator if all is working as it should.
So when the load is dropped from the circuit, the regulator can't adjust or adjust fast enough, and we see spikes of high(er) voltage DC then?

Essentially the car battery works in the same manner as a battery backup for your computer correct? I mean if theres a surge from the alternator the battery takes it before it can hit the system, much the same way a battery backup would take the surge from your outlet before hitting your PC.

Just for clarification, i did not disconnect the battery while the car was running..
I had read somewhere on this forum before hand that it could cause a lot of damage..(exactly what you guys are sayin..) and i am no shape to afford that sort of damage..
